It looks like a giant lizard sunning itself. The Guggenheim Museum designed by Canadian-American architect Frank Gehry is very much a landmark of the Spanish harbor town of Bilbao.

When the building was opened in 1997 is was a sensation. The whole world focused in wonder on Bilbao. This harbor town in northern Spain which to this point was pretty much unknown became famous in an instant. In just three years a museum was constructed here that greatly improved cultural life in Bilbao as well as the entire northern Spanish region. This became known as the Bilbao effect. Annually over a million people flock to the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao which predominantly exhibits contemporary art from the 20th century.
