In the first all-German ATP Tour tennis final in 10 years, Tommy Haas defeated Nicolas Kiefer 7-6 (6), 6-4 to take home the Mercedes-Benz Cup, and $380,000 in prize money. It was Haas' second title of the year after he missed all of 2003 due to a right shoulder injury. He defeated Andy Roddick in May at the US Clay Court Championship. Both finalists were unseeded former top-four players seeking to regain their form. In May 2002, Haas ranked second; Kiefer raned fourth in January 2000. The last time two unseeded players met for the final was in 1973 when Jimmy Connors beat Tom Okker. Both Haas and Kiefer will represent Germany at next month's Olympic Games in Athens.
