The police force in Hamburg will become the first in Germany to introduce the digital fingerprint. The NDR radio station said on Friday that the system, whereby suspected criminals will have their fingerprints scanned by computer, will be in operation in the port city by the end of July. Until now police have used the traditional method using ink and cardboard. Hamburg police hope to deploy the digital fingerprint during the Soccer World Cup next year in Germany. There are plans to install a scanner at Hamburg's AOL Arena to help security officials take fingerprints of hooligans and troublemakers and compare them in record time with information in databanks.
