Historian Claims a ‘Frau Thatcher’ Could Save Germany

A German historian claims to have the answer to his country’s political turmoil and economic future – and it’s helping to make his book an international bestseller. Dominik Geppert’s book 'Maggie Thatcher's Radical Cure - a recipe for Germany?' suggests that Germany’s ailing economic health could do with a Margaret Thatcher figure to bring it back to life. Thatcher, British prime minister from 1979 to 1990, is lauded by supporters for getting Britain's economy on track and lambasted by critics for crippling the UK's trade union movement. Geppert claims that there are parallels between Britain in the 1970s and Germany now. In the years before Thatcher came to power, Britain was at the mercy of its unions and on the verge of recession and Geppert argues that such is the plight of his own country's economy that radical solutions are being talked about in terms not dissimilar to the language used nearly 30 years ago in Britain.
