Honda recalls 2.2 million vehicles over Takata airbag defect

Honda has recalled an additional 2.2 million vehicles over a driver airbag inflator defect. The auto giant has recalled 24 million vehicles over airbag issues, which have killed 11 people and injured 139 worldwide.

The recall includes Honda and Acura models from 2005 to 2016, the company said Wednesday.

Since 2008, Honda has repaired more than six million vehicles because the Takata airbag inflator can explode and send shrapnel flying into passengers.

Takata uses ammonium nitrate to initiate a small explosion that inflates airbags. However, exposure to heat and humidity can result in a more powerful explosion that can blow apart the metal canister designed to contain the explosion.

Honda will replace the defect using parts from a new manufacturer, but those parts won't be ready until this summer. Until then, priority will be given to cars operating in the hot and humid climates on the US Gulf Coast.

Also on Wednesday, Honda announced the recall nearly 365,000 vehicles for another airbag safety issue.
