The 2015 American Music Awards took place Sunday night. The awards are designed as a glitzy extravaganza and unlike the more prestigious Grammy Awards, the winners are determined by the votes of fans.
Singing for peace
Celine Dion paid tribute to the victims of the recent Paris attacks by singing Edith Piaf's "Hymne à L'Amour" in French, moving some audience members to tears. Dion earned a rousing applause after her performance, which started with the Eiffel Tower projected behind her.
A well-known host
American singer Jennifer Lopez danced through a high-octane medley of this year's top pop songs, saying: "Tonight is about the music, and this year's music makes me want to dance." Lopez hosted the three-hour live broadcast from Los Angeles' Microsoft Theatre.
Justin Bieber at No. 1
The Canadian artist won the award for 'Best Collaboration' along with Diplo and Skrillex. On Sunday, Billboard announced his new album, "Purpose," will debut at number one on its charts Monday after selling 649,000 copies.
Top Award
British boy band One Direction won the night's biggest award for 'Artist of the Year' for the second year in a row. The prize comes just after the band released its latest album, "Made in the A.M.," that the group says will be its last before a hiatus. The band's album has sold 459,000 copies.
A new favorite
Ariana Grande won the award for 'Favorite Female Artist' in the Pop/Rock category beating out Taylor Swift, who won three awards throughout the night. Grande performed her upbeat hit "Focus" making the crowd dance.
A little bit of country
Country star Carrie Underwood belted her romantic ballad "Heartbeat" before winning the award for 'Favorite Female Artist' in the Country category. Underwood's fifth album Storyteller was released in late October and landed at Number One with sales of 177,000.
Fire on stage
The Weeknd set the stage on real fire during his performance of "The Hills." The artist from Toronto picked up two Soul/R&B awards during Sunday night's event. The Weeknd received his first award from music legend Prince.
The Force and a capella
"Star Wars" veteran Harrison Ford introduced five-piece a cappella group Pentatonix, who put their vocals to John Williams' iconic "Star Wars" score, along with a full orchestra on stage. The performance comes ahead of next month's highly-anticipated new "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" film.
