India-US Nuclear Deal in Trouble

June 20, 2008

In India the ruling coalition and its communist allies have continued to remain at odds over the issue of a nuclear energy deal with the United States. The pact was negotiated between Indian premier Manmohan Singh and US president George W Bush in 2006. The Indian communist parties have been opposing the pact, saying it undermines India's independent foreign policy. They are now threatening to withdraw their support to the coalition, which in turn could bring down the government.
