The Italian capital Rome has seen off bids from Germany, Austria and Spain to host the 2022 Ryder Cup. The biennial tournament has only been held in Europe once before in Spain, but 2018 will see the competition take place in Paris, France.

European Ryder Cup director Richard Hills praised the bid from Italy with the host venue, the Marco Simeone Golf and Country Club, based just 17km from Rome.

"The Italian bid was consistently strong and impressive across the board in terms of infrastructure, commercial structure and government support," he said in an official statement.

"With Paris in 2018 and now Rome in 2022 being the respective host city for Europe's next two stagings of the biennial contest against the United States, the magical appeal of the Ryder Cup is set to continue," said Keith Pelley, chief executive of the European Tour.

This summer, the tournament will be held in Minnesota before it heads to Paris two years later. Rome's effort to stage the event is sandwiched between two more editions in the United States.
