Japan and India Forge Closer Ties

Japan and India have agreed to expand defence ties and pledged to carry out joint military exercises and counterterrorism measures and cooperate in disaster preparedness.

Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso and his Indian counterpart, Manmohan Singh, issued a joint statement on Wednesday in Tokyo saying the two nations made "substantive progress" on a bilateral economic partnership agreement but some ground still needed to be covered.

The two sides have also signed an agreement for economic cooperation, involving Japan's 450 billion yen (3.5 billion Euros) loan for a major freight railway project in India.

The Indian PM, who's on a three-day visit to Tokyo, also met members of the Japanese business community and urged them to boost investment in India.
