Japan celebrates the elderly

Each year on the third Monday of September, the Japanese mark Respect for the Aged Day - a tradition which goes back to 1947.

Japan has one of the fastest aging populations in the world because of a very high life expectancy and decreasing birth rate. According to the latest figures released by the Japanese ministry of health, the average life expectancy is 83.02 years.
