Japanese Premier Fukuda Resigns

01/09/08September 1, 2008

Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda has resigned, less than a year after taking office. Speaking at a press conference in Tokyo, Fukuda said a "new team" was needed to break a deadlock in parliament between his Liberal Democratic Party and the opposition. The 72-year-old leader has suffered from chronically low support ratings despite reshuffling his cabinet and unveiling a major economic stimulus package.
