The Japanese IT firm NTT Data has agreed to buy computer giant Dell's IT service operations to acquire a foothold in the North American market. Japanese companies are expanding overseas amid stagnation at home.

NTT Data will pay $3 billion (2.7 billion euros) for Dell's cloud storage and other operations, which are largely focused on the healthcare sector.

The Tokyo-based company, a unit of the country's former telephone monopoly NTT, also said it would absorb about 28,000 Dell employees, mostly in North America and India.

Japanese companies are rushing to expand their presence abroad to counter unfavorable conditions at home resulting from the country's shrinking workforce that comes with having one of the lowest birthrates in the world.

NTT Data, however, is a success story. Its market value has more than doubled since 2011 on rising sales to financial and healthcare businesses. Those customers use the company's data centers and software for functions including electronic medical records, surgery management, billing and insurance claims.

Last October, Dell confirmed it would take over data storage giant EMC in a deal that valued the latter company at around $67 billion, marking the largest-ever transaction in the technology sector.
