Lebanon car bomb kills eight

A giant car bomb exploded in Beirut on Friday leaving eight dead and several wounded. The attack, at a time of civil war in neighboring Syria, is the first of its kind to occur in the Lebanese capital since 2008.

A massive car bomb explosion in the center of Beirut killed at least eight people and left 78 injured.

The explosion happened as people left work and parents were picking up their children from school.

Security and police forces were deployed to the scene of the bombing in the street near the offices of the Christian Phalange political party, a strong critic of the Syrian regime.

Although officials have not confirmed an immediate connection, the attack came amidst growing tensions in both Lebanon and neighboring Syria.

In response to Friday's events, Syrian Information Minister Omran al-Zohbi was quoted as saying, "These sort of terrorist, cowardly attacks are unjustifiable wherever they occur."

The last bombing that occurred in Beirut was on January 25, 2008, when Lebanon’s top anti-terrorism investigator was killed along with three others.
