Limiting Speed on the Autobahn?

In light of last week's Autobahn tailgater conviction, DW-WORLD readers share their view on whether a speed limit should be introduced on all German highways.

I think that a fair speed limit, considering the safety issue, could easily be set at 75 mph (120 km/h). This would enable anyone to get where their going in a timely and safe manner. When I travel to Europe, I do make use of the German autobahn. I am one of those people that is afraid to travel at too high of a speed. -- Stewart D. Bush

Certainly no more than 120 km/h because many will still exceed this by 10 to 20 km/h anyway. Since the recommendation is 130 km/h, Germany will struggle to set a limit slower than this. This means that many will travel up to 150 km/h. In the UK, where the limit is 70 mph, many will travel up to 80 mph. There has been a recent debate whether to increase our limit to 80 mph. No need, people already travel at this speed. The German devine right to speed sounds like a right to take life. -- Simon Leach

I believe speeding should be held down to about the recommended 140 km/h because of the increased traffic on the Autobahn over the last 60 years. -- Curtis
