Saving a red-feathered treasure

Ngala Killian Chimton, Oko, CameroonAugust 10, 2017

Cameroon's Kilum-Ijim forest in the Bamenda Highlands is one of the last remaining habitats of the endemic Bannerman’s Turaco bird. Environmentalists fear the bird could disappear, as habitat destruction and the tribal custom of hunting the birds for their feathers has seen the population decline. Now, tribal rulers have broken with an age-old tradition to save the bird from extinction.
