Looking for Love? Then Head to Berlin

DW staff (dc)June 15, 2005

Summer has arrived in Germany and romance is in the air. Nowhere more so, it seems, than in the nation's capital, which has just been named the most flirtatious German city.

It's official: Berlin is the flirting capital of Germany, thanks to its legions of outgoing women who aren't afraid to bat their eyelashes when an attractive man comes their way. Over 75 percent of Berlin women say they like to flirt, according to a study conducted by the Society for Rational Psychology for the editors at the popular men's magazine "Men's Health."

Living up to Berliners' reputation for being frank and uninhibited, 78 percent of women in the capital responded that they enjoy taking the first step. In this respect, they were only outdone by the women of Cologne, where four out of five women said that they initiated the flirting. Unsurprisingly perhaps, Cologne also emerged as the one-night-stand capital of Germany.

Men in southern Germany can count on a little reciprocal action should they flex their flirting muscle. The study found that almost a quarter of all flirt attempts in Munich resulted in at least a short conversation.

In contrast, Germany's north is practically a flirt-free zone. Only 46 percent of women in cities such as Bremen and Hamburg said they were willing to engage in a harmless flirt, while only one in 10 suggestive glances was rewarded with conversation.
