Marine life in the polar night

Report: Irene Quaile, Svalbard Islands, ArcticFebruary 19, 2015

This time of year in the far northern parts of the Arctic, it never gets light. Until fairly recently, scientists assumed life in the cold, icy ocean up there must become more or less dormant, with no light to trigger it. But a series of expeditions led by Norway’s Arctic University over the past three years, are changing perceptions of what happens in the polar night.
