The Winter Olympic Games opened February 8 in the sun-dipped mountains around Salt Lake City, Utah.

Though distinguished this year by an unprecedented cloak of security, thousands of athletes and fans eager to forget the past few months of terror and uncertainty plan to attend
this year's games.

Germany has sent its largest Winter Olympic team ever and hopes to repeat its success in Nagano, Japan in 1998, where it led all countries in the number of medals won.
