Spanish plane crash

A plane believed to be undergoing a trial flight for the military has crashed near Seville airport, Spain's defence ministry says. Initial reports suggest there were as many as 10 people on board the aircraft.

The Airbus A400M reportedly crashed shortly after take-off from an airport in Seville on Saturday, the country's ruling party wrote on Twitter.

The plane carrying “eight to 10” people were on the brand new aircraft that was undergoing trial flights at the airport, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said.

Initial reports suggested Rajoy had said all those on board the aircraft had died, however the prime minister's office could not confirm he had said this.

The defense ministry was not able to confirm whether there were any casualties.

The AENA; Spain's airport authority, confirmed the airports closure, saying fire crews were attending a plane crash outside its perimeter fence.

“The plane that crashed a mile (1.6 kilometers) north of Seville airport in an non-residential area was not a commercial craft,” a regional emergency services spokesperson told the AFP news agency.

All flights to Seville have been diverted to Malaga and Jerez airports, the AENA said.
