Over the coming long weekend Germany will truly come to life with a range of festivals - where you can marvel, listen and - of course - join in.

It all begins with the Carnival of Cultures in Berlin. The district of Kreuzberg will transform into a global village over four days, with its famed street party and more than 200 performing artists. The multicultural fiesta celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, with a highlight of the event the impressive parade of musical groups and costumes from across the globe on Sunday. The organizers are anticipating 1.3 million visitors.

The Jazz Festival in Moers has attracted music lovers to the Rhine now for 44 years. And the program again promises an exploration of the artistic frontiers and numerous world premieres. This festival is hardly about escaping from the world's woes, but aims to confront contemporary issues with its diverse programming, including oud player Ziad Rajab from Aleppo in Syria and ngoni player Bassekou Kouyaté from Mali.

Always a head-turner, the Wave Gothic Treffen returns to Leipzig - where organizers expect 20,000 lovers of the dark side, from home and abroad. In addition to a large range of musicians and band performances, the event will feature a host of bondage and performance artists.
