German police arrested around 65 left-wing demonstrators and fired water cannons after violent clashes erupted during a neo-Nazi rally on Saturday. Police said they intervened to remove some 1,500 protesters who had sought to block a planned march of 280 far-right activists in the western town of Braunschweig. No right-wing marchers were detained. A separate rally of the far-right in the village of Halbe, some 45 kilometers south of Berlin, took place without incident, police said. Approximately 100 supporters of the NPD, a far-right party the government has likened to the Nazis and tried unsuccessfully to ban, gathered in the village whose large war cemetery contains graves of SS soldiers.
