New Round of Climate Talks Opens in Germany

A fresh round of UN climate talks began in Bonn on Monday, June 2, aimed at building on the climate conference held in Bali in December last year.
Delegates from more than 150 countries and agencies are set to attend the two-week event, which is part of the process to hammer out a successor to the Kyoto Protocol on greenhouse gas emissions.
Aiming for US, China, India
The new agreement is intended to be passed in Copenhagen in December 2009, well before the Kyoto agreement expires in 2012. It aims to draw in not only the industrialized countries, but also major emerging countries like China and India, which were not bound to cut emissions under the provisions of the Kyoto Protocol.
A timetable for the negotiations leading up to Copenhagen was agreed in Bangkok at a UN conference in early April.
