Smartphone users often start thinking about buying a new device sooner than they would otherwise because the manufacturer no longer provides updates for their model. For smartphone manufacturers, it’s a way of pressuring customers to upgrade. Tech-minded innovators have stepped into the breach by developing their own custom operating systems. The best-known is CyanogenMod, which is has already been installed on more than eleven million devices.
