No New Treaties for Many Years, Urges Danish PM

Danish Liberal Prime Minister, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, is rallying support for a declaration promising there will be no new EU treaties for many years after the EU Constitution is adopted. During talks with Spanish Premier José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, French President Jacques Chirac and Irish EU President Bertie Ahern, Rasmussen argued that a block on new treaties would be useful. He did not say how long such a break ought to be, reported the Danish newspaper, Politiken. The new EU Constitution must pass through ratification in all 25 EU member states to enter into force. Referendums will be held in a number of countries, including Denmark. While Rasmussen’s proposal apparently gained some support from EU leaders, the Danish government coalition partner reacted negatively. The Conservative frontrunner in Sunday’s elections for the European Parliament, Gitte Seeberg, said the EU had to change as the world changes. (EUobserver.com)
