North Korea Blows up Yongbyon Cooling Tower

June 27, 2008

In another gesture to show that it is no longer seeking nuclear bombs, North Korea has destroyed the cooling tower of its main nuclear reactor complex at Yongbyon. Television footage showed the 20-meter-high tower collapse in a cloud of smoke after an explosion. This comes a day after the North Koreans finally submitted a declaration about their plutonium enrichment activities, and US President Bush, in turn, announced that he’d start the procedure to take North Korea off the list of states sponsoring terrorism.
