On a visit to Ankara, Angela Merkel repeats her opposition to EU membership for Turkey

German Chancellor Angela Merkel is continuing a trip to Turkey today with visits to a number of historical sites in Istanbul. At meetings with prime minister Tayip Erdogan on Monday she repeated her opposition to allowing Turkey to become a member of the EU. The two leaders also discussed Iran's nuclear programme. Erdogan said Turkey believed sanctions were NOT the best path. Another issue on the agenda was the integration of people of Turkish origin in Germany.
