Pakistan navy 'pushed' away Indian submarine

Pakistan has said its forces have prevented an Indian submarine from entering its waters, locating the vessel despite its 'desperate efforts' to stay hidden. Indian officials denied the reports as 'blatant lies.'

The submarine was allegedly detected south of Pakistani shores, prompting the intercept, Pakistani military said on Friday.

"Thereafter, despite the submarine's desperate efforts to escape detection, it was continuously tracked by Pakistan Navy Fleet units and pushed well clear of our waters," the navy said in a press release.

Along with the statement, the Pakistani navy released footage and photos of what they said was the Indian submarine. However, Indian navy spokesman Captain DK Sharma denied the Pakistani claim, saying it was "all blatant lies."

Strikes across the border

Tension between the two nuclear rivals has been reignited in recent months after Indian forces killed rebel leader Burhan Wani in a shootout this summer. Indian authorities faced a wave of protests and clashes in the divided region of Bangladesh, and a Pakistani-based militant group  attacked a military base near the border and killed 19 soldiers.

At the time, Indian authorities accused Islamabad of "continued and direct support" for terrorist groups.

New Delhi claims it had retaliated by conducting "surgical strikes" at terrorist bases across the border. Pakistan has responded angrily, calling the strikes "imaginary" but admitting the loss of two of its soldiers in the cross-border fire.
