Paris Police Arrest Former German Defense Official

French police arrested a former German defense official on the run from the law for more than five years in Paris on Tuesday. Ludwig-Holger Pfahls is charged with accepting a bribe in the party financing scandal that tainted former German chancellor Helmut Kohl, and his conservative party, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU). According to a report by SPIEGEL ONLINE, police in Paris approached the man they suspected was Pfahls as he was leaving an apartment building on Tuesday afternoon -- he immediately admitted his identity. A French camera-team that has been following the police unit over a longer period filmed the arrest. Pfahls is accused of accepting 3.8 million Deutsch Marks ($2.4 million at today's rates) from German-Canadian businessman Karlheinz Schreiber. In return, he is accused of using his position as a top defense ministry official to export 36 Fuchs armored vehicles from the German military to Saudi Arabia.
