PSG break Ligue 1 unbeaten record

Davis Van OpdorpFebruary 3, 2016

A 3-1 win over Lorient many not seem like a big deal for the runaway leaders in Ligue 1. However, Paris Saint-Germain 33rd game without a defeat set a new unbeaten record in France's top flight.

Paris Saint-Germain had already been overwhelming for their Ligue 1 opponents this season, but their achievements have now rewritten the history books. With their 3-1 victory over Lorient, the Parisiens went unbeaten for the 33rd-straight time in France's Ligue 1, beating a 21-year-old record previously held by Nantes.

The victory was as easy as most of PSG's results this season. Lorient's Raphael Guerreiro was able to equalize for Lorient after an early Edinson Cavani goal, but Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Layvin Kurzawa scored second-half goals to put the game out of reach.

With 14 games left in the season, PSG will have an eye on the European record, currently held by Italy's AC Milan (58 games, 1991-93). PSG also have a long way to go to catch up with unbeaten streaks set by Germany's Bayern Munich (53 games from 2013-14), and England's Arsenal (49 games in 2003-04).

Fantastic in France

Nantes's unbeaten run came in the 1994-95 Ligue 1 season, when they won their seventh of eight titles - with second-placed Olympique Lyon finishing 10 points behind.

The Parisians have simply dominated the French league this season - their victory over Lorient extended their lead to 24 points over second-placed Monaco. They have won 17 of their last 18 games - including all of their last eight - and are only six victories away from tying their own record of 27 wins in a single season.

Despite their dominance in France in recent seasons, PSG have not been able to translate that success to the European stage. They have advanced to the quarterfinals in each of the past three seasons, but have not reached the semifinals of the competition since 1995. They are to face Chelsea in the round of 16 of this year's Champions League.
