June 10, 2014

Facebook is gearing up for a new approach to mobile messaging and it seems neither money nor other companies' claims on their top managers can stop it.

David Marcus, head of eBay's payments unit PayPal, will be joining Facebook's messaging team later this month, the companies announced on Monday.

The news also came as Facebook is preparing to absorb the popular messaging service WhatsApp, which it agreed to buy for a staggering $19 billion in February.

The company's new trajectory appears to hinge on the development of separate apps that can accumulate their own customer bases.

Industry analysts also view Marcus's hiring as a signal that Facebook may be looking for a way to crack into the mobile payments business.
