In the midst of the Cold War, the Vietnam conflict triggered a massive wave of international protest. It also marked the detonation of an antimilitarist counterculture experimenting with drugs and lifestyles in all areas of pop production. Comics, antiwar films and singer-songwriters inspired young people around the world.

Since the mid-20th century, pop culture has been in the vanguard of profound social change. In Germany, accompanied by the pianos and guitars of the songwriters, pop culture pacifism joined forces with the peace movement’s "No More War” slogans - fueling mass demonstrations directed at NATO’s "Dual Track Decision”. Water breaks the stone! Petting instead of Pershing! Nonviolent resistance in accordance with Gandhi’s teachings and slogans from the civil disobedience inspired the pickets at nuclear missile bases in Germany. Writers such as Ken Follett, Alexis Jenni and Hanif Kureishi look back at those years. But it’s the views of a younger generation of musicians on the apparently long lost movement that bring the timeliness and relevance of "Peace ‘n’ Pop” into sharp relief.
