Poll: Germans would give Leonardo DiCaprio an Oscar

February 18, 2016

Leonardo DiCaprio's performance in "The Revenant" is Oscar-worthy, a majority of Germans said in a recent survey. However, only a tiny percentage said they followed the Hollywood awards.

Fifty-six percent of those surveyed said their Oscar favorite for Best Actor was Leonardo DiCaprio for his wilderness drama, "The Revenant." The 41-year-old star, who launched to international fame with "Titanic" in 1997, received his sixth Oscar nomination this year, but has yet to win a trophy.

In the poll, conducted by YouGov, only 11 percent of those surveyed chose Matt Damon ("The Martian") as Best Actor, trailed by Michael Fassbender ("Steve Jobs") with 10 percent.

Opinions were a bit more divided when it came to the Best Actress award. The highest vote (26 percent) went to Jennifer Lawrence for "Joy," with Cate Blanchett ("Carol") on her heels with 22 percent of the vote.

Only nine percent of German poll-takers saw the Oscar go to Charlotte Rampling ("45 Years") and Saoirse Ronan ("Brooklyn"), respectively.

Nevertheless, the Academy Awards - Hollywood's most prestigious accolade - don't seem to strongly interest many people in Germany. Only three percent said they would follow the Oscars "very closely," with 12 percent following "somewhat closely" and 34 percent expressing only slight interest.

The Oscars will be presented on Sunday, February 28 in Los Angeles. In addition to Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon and Michael Fassbender, Bryan Cranston ("Trumbo"') and Eddie Redmayne ("The Danish Girl") have been nominated for Best Actor.

Alongside Jennifer Lawrence, Cate Blanchett, Charlotte Rampling and Saorise Ronan, Brie Larson ("Room") rounds out the nominees for Best Actress.
