Pope Benedict has made caring for the poor and the environment his central themes this Christmas. In his traditional Urbi et Orbi blessing from St Peter's Square, the Pope warned that much human suffering is caused by environmental degradation. He said he hoped Christmas would bring hope to people living in poverty and war and appealed for solutions to conflicts in the Middle East and Africa.
