PopXport Ranking - The List

Mikko Stübner-Lankuttis / FLJune 10, 2015

Around 900 singles and over 400 albums produced in Germany have charted outside the country since 1970. And our list contains all those records as well as their peak positions.

Which tracks and artists made it onto the list?

We drew up a catalog of strict criteria for the PopXport Ranking:

A single or album was only added to the list if the record has charted in Britain, the US or another major music market. The three-German speaking countries of Germany, Austria and Switzerland are excluded, as are live albums, compilations and greatest-hits records.

Once that first condition was met, we looked at the following four factors: highest chart position in Germany, highest chart position in Britain, highest chart position in the US and highest chart position in another major market (e.g. Japan, France or Australia).

All records must have been produced in Germany. That means artists and producers who either hail from Germany or were based in the country at the time of release.

We also devised a points system: a No. 1 earns 100 points, but #99 just one. That also means that e.g. 31st spot translates into an initial points tally of 69.

The size of the music-buying market is an additional variable for our calculations: points for the German chart position were multiplied by a factor of 1.1, points for the British chart position by 1.2 and for the American market by a factor of 1.3.

Last date for submissions to the list was June 1, 2015.
