Porsche Recalls Cayenne SUVs

Car manufacturer Porsche said on Friday it had recalled 22,158 of its Cayenne sports utility vehicles worldwide due to wiring problems that could lead to a cable fire beneath the instrument panel. The repairs would entail fixing a spring in the brake that could chafe on electrical cables, a Porsche spokesman said. There had been no known accidents due to the problem so far, he added. The issue affects all Cayennes built from the model's introduction in October 2002 until July 19, 2003, the spokesman said. Porsche, the world's most profitable carmaker, introduced the Cayenne to complement sales of its traditional range of sports cars. The Cayenne is especially popular in the United States, where it is already selling better than Porsche's sports cars. Last year, German rival Volkswagen recalled 620 Touaregs in the United States because of a potential problem with the routing of its parking-brake wire. VW also reported it had caused no known injuries or accidents.
