The hand belongs to an orangutan that is reported to have been kept for six years by a resident of the Indonesian village of Korek. It will now be sent to a wildlife organization for treatment. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) lists Sumatran orangutans as critically endangered and likely to die out in the next ten years. Predictions for Bornean orangutans are not much better. They are also officially endangered.
