Rash of Suicides in India - Cotton Farmers without Hope

Many Indian cotton farmers are being driven to despair by crippling debts. An estimated 200,000 of them have taken their own lives in the past few decades. Many went deep into the hock to buy genetically modified cottonseed, which they hoped would improve yields. But GM crops require ideal conditions.

The rash of suicides reflects the inequality of opportunity within global capitalism - big multi-national corporations make all the profit while small farmers can no longer survive.
