With 170 ships calling at the port, Hamburg is expected to see cruise passenger numbers rise to 700 000 this year. This according to figures released by the terminal's operators Cruise Gate Hamburg (CGH). That's an increase of around one third on last year's performance. For 2017 CGH is projecting double figure growth.

"We've done a lot", says Jens Meier, head of Hamburg's Port Authority (HPA), the parent company of CGH. "And we're well prepared for the arrival of even bigger ships." The Steinwerder Terminal, which opened in 2015, has been used by 90 ships and 530 000 passengers since the beginning of this year", adds CGH boss Sacha Rougier. The terminal for mega-liners was built to a standard unsurpassed elsewhere and has proved popular with both passengers and operators alike.
