Renewables in a South-Sea Paradise

The three South Pacific atolls of Tokelau have achieved total independence from oil for their power needs. Now solar panels supply their electricity. It's renewable, dependable, and it's radically changed their lives.

This dependable power supply is having an impact on the 1400 residents' way of life: washing machines and freezer chests have become commonplace. The time saved is often spent in front of the TV or on the internet, where young people can educate themselves. And Tokelauans are getting around in electric golf carts. They hope to set an example for other island nations to follow.
