Report: Bayern offer Hummels contract

April 25, 2016

In the latest speculation about Mats Hummels' future, a German paper has reported that Bayern Munich have offered him a four-year contract. Meanwhile, Marcel Schmelzer has signed a long-term extension with Dortmund.

A report published on the website of the mass-circulation daily "Bild" on Monday said Bayern had offered the 27-year-old national team player a four-year contract worth around 10 million euros ($11.3 million) per season plus bonuses. Dortmund could expect to receive a transfer fee of around 30 million euros for their captain.

Hummels' contract currently runs until the end of the 2016-17 season. The national team defender fueled speculation last Wednesday with a cryptic statement to a reporter after Dortmund's German Cup win over Hertha Berlin.

"It's a very difficult decision," he told Sky television. "When I decide, then everyone will understand why it has been so difficult for me. For the last few weeks, it's almost certainly cost me half an hour before bed every night, because it's so personal," he added.

Dortmund to match Bayern offer?

BVB chairman, Hans-Joachim Watzke has not given up hope of keeping Hummels in Dortmund and according to "Bild," the club's management are prepared to offer Hummels a similar wage as Bayern. Last week, Watzke also told the Munich-based daily "Süddeutsche Zeitung" that he would "fight for Mats like no other player."

Other factors beyond money could be attracting Hummels towards the Bavarian capital. Munich is where his father and agent operate a sports agency. A move south would allow him to be closer to his family, as well as the family of his wife Cathy, who hails from nearby Dachau.

Hummels also has historical ties to Bayern, having spent more than a decade in the club's youth system before playing with the reserves. He also made his Bundesliga debut with the club, but having failed to break into the first squad on a regular basis, he moved to Dortmund in the 2007-08 winter transfer window.

Schmelzer signs on long term

Amid the renewed speculation about Hummels' possible departure, and with Ilkay Gündogan and Henrikh Mkhitaryan still not having signed extensions, Dortmund coach Thomas Tuchel may have breathed a small sigh of relief with the news that Marcel Schmelzer has committed to the team long term. Dortmund announced on Monday that Schmelzer had signed a contract extension to keep him at the club until 2021.

"Marcel Schmelzer is not only one of the best left-backs in Europe, but also a wonderful person with whom BVB enjoys a great deal of mutual admiration and respect," Watzke said in a statement issued by the club.
