Rewe, Germany’s second-largest food retailer, is planning to open an organic food supermarket in Düsseldorf in May, according to a report in the Financial Times Deutschland on Tuesday. The company, which is quoted in the report as saying it wants to challenge the belief that organic food is available only to the elite, will offer products under Rewe’s Fullhorn brand as well as recognized organic brands and regional products in the new store. Rewe plans to open a further three or four new organic foods stores within the year, the report said. Sales of organic products in Germany are estimated to be around €3.5 billion ($4.6 billion) per year, representing around 3 percent of the total food market.
