Schily Demands Match-fixing Clean-up

German Interior minister Otto Schily has demanded a thorough investigation into alleged match-fixing after a referee was accused of betting on the results of at least five

matches he handled. "Referees who manipulate the result of matches for their own benefit must be shown a red card and sent packing," he told the Bild daily. German Football Federation (DFB) director general Theo Zwanziger revealed Monday that Robert Hoyzer could have fixed as many as five matches for financial gain in what is the biggest scandal in German football for 34 years. Hozyer came under investigation following a cup match between non-league side SC Paderborn and SV Hamburg on Aug. 21 last year. In that match he awarded two dubious penalties to Paderborn and sent off Hamburg striker Emile Mpenza for complaining as Paderborn came from 2-0 down to win 4-2.
