Schily Wants Easier Deportation of "Suspect" Foreigners

German Interior Minister Otto Schily on Wednesday underlined the necessity of new legislation that would make it easier to deport potential foreign extremists from Germany. "We don't want in our country a person who has spent time in an al Qaeda training camp," Schily said in a television interview. The minister admitted that current police law made it possible to revoke residency status if a person posed a danger to domestic security, but added, "There have been problems implementing it." Schily said, "We have to clear this up. We owe it to the security of the citizens." A tightening of deportation laws will also top the agenda, when Germany's conservative opposition meets with the ruling Social Democrat-Green coalition on Wednesday to continue talks on a long-delayed immigration law.
