Search is On in Japan For New Premier

02/09/08September 2, 2008

Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party has begun the search for a new prime minister, a day after Yasuo Fukuda announced he was stepping down. Taro Aso, a former foreign minister and the ruling Liberal Democratic Party’s secretary general, is a front-runner for the post. Fukuda’s resignation represents yet another setback for the ruling party, which suffered a major defeat in Upper House elections last year and triggered the resignation of then Premier Shinzo Abe.
