Second time around - will the people of Ireland say yes to the Lisbon treaty?

Ema Nevenka JülichOctober 1, 2009

European leaders will be focussing their attention on Ireland, Friday. The Irish have a second opportunity to vote on the Lisbon Treaty, which is designed to improve decision-making processes in the EU. The "No's" won the day in the first poll last year, but the financial crisis has made the prospect of funds from Brussels even more important for the island nation. That and a fresh deal struck with Dublin to provide new assurances on issues like abortion, may well sway voters. Opinion polls suggest the following: 48 percent support the EU treaty. That is a big lead over those who intend to reject it: just one third of the electorate. The number of those undecided is not as high as last year. 19 percent are apparently uncertain about how they will vote.
