In a literal tale of getting rich off the poor, a German social worker bought himself a BMW after embezzling public funds meant for homeless people and refugees. On Tuesday, the 39-year-old Berliner was convicted of embezzling €130,000 ($164,000) and received a two-year suspended jail sentence. He was also told to repay the money. "He wasn't exactly adhering to the Robin Hood principle," said a court spokesman, referring to the medieval legend who robbed the rich to give to the poor. Earlier, the defendant told the tabloid Bild it had been easy for him to channel funds to his own account because he had clearance to issue individual payments of up to €1,500. "It was an enormous temptation, just a computer click away," he was quoted as saying.
