New quake rocks Pakistan

A major earthquake of at least 6.8 magnitude has hit southwest Pakistan. The disaster comes less than a week after a massive tremor in the same region killed at least 359 people.

The new earthquake struck Saturday in Pakistan's southwestern Baluchistan province, the US Geological Survey reported.

Pakistan's Meteorological Department measured the latest earthquake at 7.2 magnitude with an epicenter located about 150 kilometers (90 miles) west of Khuzdar.

"It was not an aftershock, Zahid Rafi, director of the National Seismic Centre of Pakistan, told Geo TV. "It was an independent earthquake."

At least 15 were killed in the latest tremor. On Tuesday, a 7.7 magnitude earthquake in the same region left 359 people dead and more than 100,000 homeless.

Abdur Rasheed, the deputy commissioner of Awaran district where both quakes were centered, said, "Today's earthquake damaged the already damaged buildings and homes."
