Spain: El Hierro...the ecological paradise

June 17, 2010

El Hierro is the smallest of the Canary Islands and is focusing on ecological tourism. Instead of high rise hotels and shopping malls the island offers untouched nature and a virgin coastline.

El Hierro cannot compete with the huge numbers of tourists heading for Gran Canaria and Teneriffa. And it does not want to. The inhabitants are deliberately keeping a lid on the number of tourists. They are particularly proud of their environmentally friendly agriculture. Every thing grown on the island is certified organic. The alternative path taken by El Hierro has earned the island the distinction of being a UNESCO certified Biosphere reserve. Other islands in the Canaries now want to follow El Hierro's lead.
