The announcement of a February date for the Spanish referendum on the EU constitution comes after the government of Jose Luis Rodrigez Zapatero pledged to hold a vote as quickly as possible after the Constitution was agreed last month. The vote could come towards the end of February. Spaniards will be asked: "Do you approve the treaty instituting a constitution for the European Union?" Both the government and the leading opposition party will campaign for a yes vote. Denmark, France, Ireland, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Belgium, the Czech Republic and Britain are amongst those also planning to hold polls. Germany has so far rejected the idea. (EUobserver.com)
