Spain: Traumatic memories

February 11, 2015

The terror attacks in Paris awakened bad memories in Spain of the Madrid train bombings nearly 11 years ago. Almost 200 people were killed in the attacks, and survivors are traumatized to this day.

The attack came just days before Spain's general election. The country was in shock and thousands of demonstrators took to the streets. The majority of Spaniards, hardened by decades of terror by the Basque separatist group ETA, tried to quickly return to normal life. Survivors' groups say little has been done in the country to analyze and come to terms with the attacks. In addition, Spain's current economic problems mean many people go without the psychological counseling they need.
